Smartworld’s successful installation of Special Airport Systems played significant role in completion of Phase 1 expansion of Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 2.

Dubai Aviation City Corporation (DACC) is the ultimate authority that owns and overlooks the entire operations of the Dubai International Airport. DACC, which is also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), is one of the strategic projects of the Government of Dubai that aims to position the emirate as a commercial centre and international logistics hub. The corporation was established as an autonomous body through a decree issued by His Highness (HH) Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to undertake development of Dubai’s air transport industry and to oversee all aviation related activities.

The Challenge

One of the projects currently being handled by the DACC is the expansion of Dubai International Airport—a project that aims to boost passenger traffic to 90 million passengers by the year 2018. Part of the project is the planned expansion of Terminal 2 of the Dubai International Airport, which has been divided into key phases of development. For the first phase of the Terminal 2 expansion, DACC acquired the services of Smartworld, a Smart Solutions provider to facilitate the installation and implementation of a Special Airport System for Terminal 2.

The Solution

Smartworld recommended the installation of a Special Airport System that included the following Smart Aviation Services;

  • Computer Network Equipment (CNE)
  • Wireless Data Network (WDN)
  • Structured Cabling Network (SCN)
  • Fire Alarm System (FAS)
  • Public Announcement System (PAS)
  • Security Access Control System (SACS)
  • Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)
  • IPTV
  • VoIP
  • Master Clock System (MCS)
  • Flight Information Display System (FIDS)
  • Tetra Radio System (TRS)

The installation was handled by a team of aviation and engineering experts that identified all the requirements of the project. From this point, the team was able to draw up a plan that sought to execute and achieve all the identified deliverables. During the course of the project, the Smartworld team worked closely with other entities involved in the expansion project. These included;

  • Securing engineer approval for subcontractors and suppliers for all 12 systems to be installed
  • Preparation of shop drawings
  • Acquisition and procurement of all materials
  • Actual installation
  • Testing
  • Commissioning

The Results

The project allowed Smartworld to present the DACC with unique offerings and added values. True to their reputation as world class master system integrators, Smartworld was able to cater to the very aggressive timeline presented by the client, resulting in the ‘on-time’ completion of the project. The company was able to effectively liaise with all the stakeholders and contractors of the project, which resulted in the successful implementation of a well-recognized Special Airport System—a crucial factor that played an important role in the seamless expedition of all airport services required by the client.
